TECAR Therapy
TECAR therapy uses a mild radiofrequency current to create gentle warmth in the muscles, tendons and joints being treated. At Crestwell Medical, our physiotherapists use it alongside hands-on treatment and exercise, as part of a plan built around your symptoms and goals.
What is TECAR therapy?
TECAR stands for capacitive and resistive energy transfer. A physiotherapist moves a handheld applicator over the area being treated while a plate rests elsewhere on your body. The current produces warmth from within the tissues rather than on the surface of the skin. Most people find it comfortable and relaxing.
Who it may help
We may suggest TECAR therapy as part of treatment for:
- muscle tightness and spasm
- back and neck pain
- joint stiffness, including in the knee and shoulder
- tendon pain
- recovery after sports injuries
It isn’t a treatment on its own. It’s used to make movement and exercise more comfortable, so you can make progress with your rehabilitation.
What happens at an appointment
Your first appointment starts with an assessment, so your physiotherapist can understand your symptoms and check that TECAR is suitable for you. If it is, treatment usually takes 10 to 20 minutes of the session, alongside other physiotherapy. You’ll feel warmth during treatment, and you can tell your physiotherapist at any time if it feels too warm.
Is TECAR therapy safe for me?
TECAR therapy isn’t suitable for everyone. Your physiotherapist won’t use it if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, if you’re pregnant, or over an area with a tumour, an active infection, a blood clot or reduced feeling. Tell us about any metal implants or medical conditions when you book.
